Business Card Tips For Your Startup
If you're starting up a new business, chances are good that your marketing budget is on the small side. While you may not be able to afford the services of a professional marketer or to rent space on a billboard, you can (and should) certainly invest in professional-looking business cards. It's best to use a printing service, as the cards will look better than if you print them out at home. Read on for some tips on deciding what should be on your card.
Less Is Often More
In today's world, many small business owners have a cellphone number, an email address, a website, plus many social media accounts. While it's great to have lots of options for potential clients to contact you, putting too many on your business card is overkill in most cases. Consider sticking to just the basics: your name, one phone number, email address and website.
The exception here is if you are in a creative field that relies heavily on a portfolio. If this is the case, go ahead and include your username for Instagram, Pinterest, or any one social media account that features photos of your work.
Have a Logo Professionally Designed
You might not have much money, but find a way to get your logo designed by a pro. If this is impossible, you might be able to barter with (or beg) a talented friend or acquaintance. For best results, choose a logo that is relatively simple and not too busy; this will look clean and crisp when you have it printed or embossed on your card.
While you're at it, come up with a tag line or slogan to include on the logo. Read up on some tips for coming up with a great slogan, then try out a few on your friends before making your final decision.
Be Unique
In a sea of business cards, you are going to want to make yours stand out. Think about your business and what type of service or product you are selling, and go from there. For example, if you're a photographer, having a stunning photo as your background is a good way to make it shine. Spending a bit extra on a heavier or more glossy card is another way to make it feel a bit different from the rest.
You can also choose a different texture, a larger size or even a shape other than rectangular. Be creative, but don't go overboard: One or two interesting features is enough. Having an extra-glossy, neon pink business card in the shape of a heart might make your potential clients cringe. Also, consider that your card is going to need to fit easily in a pocket or wallet to avoid being dropped or tossed in the nearest trash can.
Expand to Other Products
Once you have your business cards ready to print, ask your printer about other products that he or she may offer. These may be available at a discount if you are already ordering the cards, so be sure to ask! Some possibilities include magnets with your logo and contact information on them, larger cards that can be mailed to potential customers, luggage tags, keychains or t-shirts. What might work best for you really depends on your industry; don't be afraid to ask your printer for suggestions!
As you grow your startup, it's a good idea to invest some of your proceeds toward more marketing materials and services. In business, it's often not "what you know," but also "who you know," and distributing your materials to a variety of people is a great way to network and meet others who may be able to help you grow your business.
